Lawn care guide for Australian lawns
Most Australian lawns are warm-season grasses like buffalo, couch, kikuyu and zoysia. They grow fast in spring and summer and slow down in the cooler months. A few simple habits keep them green and thick.
How often to mow
Mow every one to two weeks in spring and summer, and every three to four weeks in winter. Never cut off more than about a third of the leaf at once.
How high to cut
Leave the grass a bit longer in hot, dry weather. Longer leaves shade the soil and help the lawn cope with heat. Scalping the lawn lets weeds in.
Watering
- Water deeply and less often, so the roots grow down.
- Water in the early morning, when less is lost to the sun and wind.
- Follow your local water rules: many areas have set watering days or times.
Feeding and weeds
- Feed the lawn in spring, and again in early autumn.
- Pull or treat weeds while they are small.
- Fill bare patches with turf or runners in the warm months.
When to call a lawn mowing service
If the lawn gets away from you in spring, a regular mowing round keeps it in shape. Many services also edge, blow paths clean and take the clippings away.
Questions about lawn care
How often should I mow my lawn in summer?
Every one to two weeks. Fast growers like kikuyu and couch may need a weekly cut in the peak of summer.
What is the best time of day to water the lawn?
Early morning. Less water is lost to heat and wind, and the grass dries before evening.
